Togetherness Meditation - Day 104

Aloha CREW!

Today, the MorningCrew and the "It's Noon on the East Coast" Crew met up for meditative togetherness. The "It's Midday in the Americas" Crew will be getting together at 11:30am PDT/2:30pm EDT and then the EveningCrew will Stop. Drop. MEDITATE! after the sun sets.

The community-fostering question for the day is:

What are some of your favorite books/magazines and why? (Can be Dharma-related or not.)

And a Bruce Lee quote for today:

"Now I see that I will never find the light
Unless, like the candle, I am my own fuel,
Consuming myself."

Enjoy the day, Online Meditation Crew! Namaste _/|\_ <3 \m/

  1. NonDharma books: William Gibson's Pattern Recognition and Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy -- Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars. Also love "The Goldbug Variations" by Richard Powers. Powers uses the novel to explore the intersection of scientific and artistic ideas. Challenging but rewarding.

Favorite Dharma books: I can probably answer this in a few months when I finish the backlog of buddhist books I've purchased recently. (It's the fault of all you Twitter buddhists who keep recommending books which I keep buying)

  2. Non-Dharma: The Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin. Also the Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks is hella awesome.

Dharma: Against The Stream by Noah Levine and Hardcore Zen by Brad Warner. These are the first 2 books I read on Buddhism.

Mags: Playboy and Guitar World. I picked up Tricycle and subscribed to Shambhala Sun, so the typicals. Don't know of any others.

  4. Dharma books:
"The Core Teachings: Buddhist Practice and Progress" by Venerable Master Hsing Yun (if I was to recommend 1 book to anyone looking for the best introduction to the basic concepts of Buddhism, this is the one. And, Venerable Master Hsing Yun is my master whom I've taken refuge and precepts under.)
"Zen Shorts" by Jon Muth (kids book, love it)
"Hardcore Zen" by Brad Warner (hilarious)
"The Three Pillars of Zen" by Philip Kapleau (life changing)

    Non-dharma:
    "Pattern Recognition" by William Gibson
"5/3/1: The Simplest and Most Effective Training System for Raw Strength" by Jim Wendler (the strength training program I am on)
    Wired Magazine
    Dwell Magazine
    Power Magazine
"Raising the Bar" by Dave Tate

  5. I don't know where/when to start-Age 16. 25, 35, 50? Books have been my food, my sustenance through the many changes in my life. Agatha Christie, Robert Heinlein, Greg Bear, Ram Dass, I read authors rather than just single books. I usually read 1-3 books a week-x 20 years- well you get the picture. I read for insight, for hope, for entertainment, for education because it is recommended-I just read. Recommend something?

  6. Dharma - Buddhism for Dummies. Very simple book introducing one to Buddhism in general.

Other Dharma - Drawing Down the Moon

Mags - Wired, MaximumPC, OXM, Nintendo Power

There are many others but that's what I can think of right now.
